I Don?t Own a Printer
Published Sunday, April 08, 2007 by Technology Monster.| Yesterday, I found myself on a Skype call with a colleague of mine and we were editing a Google document on the fly preparing for another three way Skype call that we’re having today. I was sitting there watching the document screen refresh every time my collaborator stopped typing, watching his actions in the Skype video screen (as he watched me on the video as well.) |

Skype's Prices Are Creeping Up
Published Saturday, April 07, 2007 by Technology Monster.| I've written about the creep up of VoIP calling rates before. Called Skype Pro, these plans, which have just debuted in Europe and will be rolled out worldwide this year, allow users to make unlimited calls to domestic phones for a fixed monthly charge. People who sign up won't have to pay per-minute fees for SkypeOut, and will also enjoy lower international calling fees (yup, Skype Pro users will still have to pay international calling rates, in addition to purchasing the plan). |
Iowa Telco Pretends Ripping Off Telcos Via Bad Regulations Is Protecting The Little Guy
Published by Technology Monster.| That doesn't mean we didn't understand why the telcos did this -- it was due to bad regulations that allowed local telecom operators to charge ridiculously high termination fees to other telcos for terminating calls on their network. This absolutely costs the big telcos plenty of money -- but they shouldn't be blocking the phone calls, they should be complaining about the regulations that allowed such exorbitant termination fees in the first place. |
Bangladesh Arrests People For Offering A VoIP Network
Published Thursday, April 05, 2007 by Technology Monster.| Back in 2005, there was a report showing how the VoIP blockade, which was designed to help the monopoly government-backed phone service, actually did a lot more harm to Bangladesh by making it harder for them to get involved in things like offshore call centers. Apparently, though, the government hasn't quite figured that out yet, and rather than allowing VoIP services to help the country grow, they're raiding and arresting those trying to improve telecom services in the country. |
VoIP: Not The Cheapest Calling Option?
Published by Technology Monster.| -- Arnold thinks that since Skype recently raised its rates, the service, allowing for Web-based calls, is no longer the cheapest way for people to make all types of international calls. Indeed, as services like Skype, owned by eBay, start to desperately search for ways to make money, the notion that Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calling is the cheapest way to make international calls may not hold true for much longer. |
Vonage: Making Calls to Santa
Published Wednesday, April 04, 2007 by Technology Monster.| I have been slamming Vonage in posts for months now, for various good reasons. Parents buying presents for your kids, listen up: Vonage offers you a direct line to Santa. Here's how this service, called CallSanta, works: Kids can use a Vonage line to dial 1 (700) CallSanta. Those voice mails to Santa are then forwarded to their parents' e-mail boxes, so the Vonage account holders know exactly what to put under the tree. |
Poll Says Cellphones Still Aren't Killing Political Polls
Published Saturday, October 28, 2006 by Technology Monster.| And every time election day gets near, you can count upon pundits and articles about how the polls might not be reliable this year, because they're missing all of these people that don't have land lines anymore. Not only is the cellphone-only population still not that large, but people who only have cellphones are less likely to be registered to vote, probably due to the fact that this population skews younger. |
Learning Like Kids
Published Friday, October 20, 2006 by Technology Monster.| So the second best thing about being in Bolton yesterday after the amazing group of Year 6 students that were in attendance was that I got to sit in on an introductory Garage Band workshop that and Joe Moretti, and ADE from the UK was giving. We did some blogging yesterday, too, and another highlight from yesterday’s workshop was an impromptu Skype call with Chris Turek from November Learning to ask a question about the software that Bolton was using to support its network. |
Jordan Joins The Axis Of Skype-Banners
Published by Technology Monster.| The latest to jump on board this bandwagon is the country of Jordan, which has been informing ISPs that they must block the service. The reason here seems pretty clear; Skype is threatening the profits of the incumbent carrier, Jordan Telecom. Naturally, this is upsetting many of Skype's users in the country. Amusingly, the above article (from a Jordanian news site) criticizes the government's actions, but not for blocking the service, but for failing to explain its rationale. |
Acme Packet: Almost as Big as Vonage
Published Wednesday, October 18, 2006 by Technology Monster.| Looking at what's been happening with its shares (they are up 6% since the IPO), we can already see that Wall Street is treating the outfit better than Web-calling giant Vonage, whose shares tanked after it went public. Investors, apparently, already value Acme, a little-known company, at $1.13 billion -- nearly as high as Vonage, with a $1.2 billion market cap. As VoIP expert Jon Arnold said in a recent blog entry, "Vonage's revenues are 10-15 times that of Acme's, but look who's making money." |
